There seems to be an ongoing debate in the world of laundry which is better front load vs top load washing machines. The front-load is the most popular in the country by far. The top load is the least expensive and there’s a lot to like about it too. You just throw the clothes in, it moves them around and washes them. One thing to consider about this style of a washing machine is water consumption and electricity costs.

Agitator vs Pulsator

In washing machines, the clothes are manipulated inside the tub and uses the friction of the clothes on each other that does the cleaning. This friction is generated by one of two mechanisms. 

The agitator which is most common in top loader washing machines has the tall spiral column that sits in the middle of your washing machine tub. The agitator works by turning and moving the clothes through the water against each other in the soapy water to clean them. The agitator is a more aggressive washer because it forces the clothes against each other to wash.

The pulsator works similarly but instead of manipulating the clothes it moves the water around so the clothes rub against themselves causing the friction needed to get clean. The pulsator is more suited to delicate washing because the water is being manipulated through the clothes. 

Pulsators can be found in newer model top loaders and front loader washing machines. The clothes are cleaned in the same way by the manipulation of the water and the clothes tumbling over one another creating the friction.

Washing machines that don’t have the agitator inside allows you to wash larger sized loads. Most of these styles of washers give you about 5 cubic feet of capacity. One cubic foot is about the volume of one basketball.

Washing Machine Energy Efficiency 

After a washing machine has completed its wash cycle, it fills the tub up with water agitates or pulsates the load again and then goes into the spin cycle to remove the water from the clothing. 

Older top loader washing appliances have been known to use over 40 gallons of water to wash a single load.

These older models of top-loading washing machines, it goes to ring the clothes out by spinning but they don’t spin all that fast, therefore the clothes retain much of the water, which means that the dryer has to work harder and that means more electricity. 

At this point, you may be asking yourself, “Which washing machine is best to buy?” There is more to learn about these newer model machines and the features that make them so much better than the older models. One of those features being the higher efficiency.

High-Efficiency Washing Machines

Nowadays you can purchase what’s called high efficiency or H.E. washing machine. No matter if you are considering front load vs top load washing machines. These machines come in top or front loading styles. They’re called H.E. for a reason. These types of washing machines use fewer resources, less energy, a lot less water, less water, and less energy consumption is a good thing. These machines also have something else going for them. 

You may ask, “How much water does a high-efficiency washer use?”

These machines are so efficient that they only use 15 -20 gallons of water to wash a single load. They also carry a more efficient and more powerful motor that produces higher spin speeds.

With the higher spin speeds, this type of design can bring you better extraction or the draining of water, they come out the wash much dryer than an older or agitator style washing machine. Higher spin speeds mean clothes come out of the machine drier, so they spend less time in the dryer, less water, less energy, less drying time, all equal big savings on your energy bill. 

High Efficiency Front Load Washing Machine

Worldwide commercial laundromats have been using high-efficiency front-loading machines like this forever. These types of machines practically do the washing with themselves the tumbling motion they produce of moving the clothes over each other and back and forth equates to better agitation and better cleaning. By mixing up the movements you introduce different types of agitation for different needs.

One key thing to note is these front load machines are a little bit bigger than a conventional washing machine. What’s kind of neat about high-efficiency front-load machines is we can stack these the machines one on top of the other. This is a good option if you need to save space and don’t want to bend down so low. There are pedestal options that also provide more height and storage capacity.

Features To Look For In Washing Machines

The new features of washing machines are amazing. Better cleaning, more ways to clean advanced cycles, seemingly life-changing. Okay, well at least laundry changing. Here are three cool new features no matter if you are going for a top or front loading washing machine.

Feature One

Capacity. These new machines are huge, some of the largest have 5 cubic foot capacities. A cubic foot is quite a bit of laundry all squeezed in there. It’s enough to do your King size bedding you actually can get a King size comforter and all of your bedding inside at one time. 

Feature Two

Feature number two is the actual front load capability. Not long ago these were only available in a laundry mat perhaps. Now they’re available in your home. These front loaders use less water than a traditional machine would.

Feature Three

Aesthetics. White isn’t your only option anymore. New machines are coming gleaming stainless steel and some even in colors. Washing machines have come a long way in just a generation or two.
